Day 20: Unfortunate Events pt. 3: The Trial

✻   ✻   ✻   ✻   ✻

All I wanted was to get back to my bed and sleep. It was nearly 11 at night and too much had happened that day all because of me. However as I approached the Inn, I could see that there were Paladins roaming about. They were stopping the various people still out, seeming intent on finding someone. I thought about not asking anyone what was going on, but my curiosity got the better of me. As I passed a group of people on my way into the Inn, I asked them about the Paladins. One of them looked me up and down, eyes wide, before walking past me to the door.
“We found her!" the elf shouted, "She’s right here!” I felt a chill sweep over me. If the Paladins were searching for me, clearly I had done something. I suppose word of me almost killing Mabel got out. Or perhaps my involvement with Isaac and Billy and the 'undead' fiasco at the library was what they were after me for. With how crummy I felt, I didn't care much what it was they wanted me for. I hated myself and punishment for what I've done felt right.
The Paladins looked to me standing just beyond the door frame. As they made way toward me, I moved out to them. I automatically put my hands out to be taken since I had no fight left in me. As they place me under arrest the lead Paladin states, “You are here by under arrest for forcing Cleric Rob to use forbidden magic, turning him over to the Black Guard and for working for Pendral.”
As soon as I heard the accusation, a spark of fight flared in me.
"I did no such thing,” I firmly responded. The Paladin then looked me in the eyes."It was not my intentions for him to be destroyed, but I made him do nothing!"
“We were informed you forced him to use forbidden magic.”
“Like I said, I did no such thing,” I defended, keeping my voice firm but non aggressive, “A boy had died outside the city. The father had recommended Cleric Rob. So we carefully brought the boy in undetected and once we found Cleric Rob, it was then made known to me that resurrection was forbidden magic. I was about to ask if he could preserve the body, that way we could go to a different city to resurrect the body, when he nodded to the other Cleric to leave the room. I'm then asked to present the boy, to which he performed the resurrection right there in front of me. Granted, I did nothing to stop him,” I explained.
“That seems pretty convenient none of the other Clerics were there-”
“My companion, Cortanna, she was there and could testify to the truthfulness of what had happened,” I interjected. The Paladin gave a wary look before asking for a quick description of her.
“Okay, so even if that were true, you were warned about the Black Guard were you not?”
“I was.”
“So, why was it that you stayed behind when the Black Guards caught up to you. My sources say you had plenty of time and space to escape.” I felt a mild headache starting to begin. How I wished people could just be in my head for a moment and understand.
“I stayed because I wasn’t sure what would happen if both of us attempted to flee. I figured I could stall them long enough that my companion had a better chance to get that boy back to his father alive.”
“And because you gave yourself up you decide to give up Cleric Rob’s name to save yourself or was this proof of you working for Pendral?” the Paladin persisted. My stoic demeanor was beginning to vanish as the memories of that morning rushed in.
“I had every intentions of saving him. Another member in my party has a sword of wishing to which I was going to use a wish to save Cleric Rob,” I answered stiffly. The Paladin rolled his eyes before more condescendingly saying, “You can’t save someone when their soul’s been destroyed.”
“I know!” I snapped. I took a quick breath and pushed aside the anger that welled up inside me. Then more calmly, yet measured, I continued, “I didn’t know it was going to happen so fast. 50 yards away was where the rest of my party was. I figured there would have at least been a trial.”
The Lead Paladin, seeming annoyed with my continued defence, replied, “Don’t worry, we’ll make sure there’s a trial for you.” I looked at him at the oddness of his response to what I just said. I figured as one last statement before taking me to my trial, I’d defend against the assumption I was working for Pendral.
“I did help kill Pendral.”
The Paladin, as though all my alibis had been ridiculous, mutters, “I’m sure you did.”
I wasn't sure what to expect. It wouldn't surprise me if I was given the death sentence, but perhaps I'd be placed in jail for a long time. Death would be a lot quicker. I wouldn't have to sit in my memories of this tragic day. I'm pretty sure I am immortal to aging, but only time will tell. As we walked along the streets, a few folk standing in the door ways of buildings, eyeing the Angelic being escorted in manacles by Paladins. It was humiliating. What shame I brought to my race. How was it my actions went so disastrously wrong? I thought briefly about my companions, how sure they wouldn't miss me. I couldn’t blame them either since I hadn't brought anything good to the party.
I was taken into a grand Cathedral. I didn't know which deity it was for, but the craftsmanship and splendor dulled the awfulness of my situation for a moment. The vaulted ceiling stretched so high into the sky, I had to wonder how it was I hadn't noticed the building when I first entered the Court of the Gods that morning. It was large and filled to the rim with Clerics representing the various Gods. I was placed in the middle of all of them. Before me, whom I could only assume to be, were the lead Clerics of the Court (or for Palor). Every eye was judging, condescending, or filled with delight at my misfortune. I managed to look up into the eyes of my accusers.
“We’ve heard all you’ve had to say in your defense,” one of the Clerics began. I assumed him to be the Head of the Clerics with the splendor of his robes and the head dresses that adorned his head. I was about to question how he had known what I had said when I noticed the Paladin who had interrogated me earlier had been standing by him for sometime. I couldn't recall when he had disappeared from me during our travel to the trial.
“We are curious though as to who you are,” a Cleric to the right of the Lead Cleric spoke. I looked at him and figured I should avoid mentioning that I was cast from the Kingdom of Heironious.
“My name is Araja Eloirakn. I and my friends are new to the city having traveled from a small town south of here called Podunk,” I said as a simple introduction of myself. It seemed to do the trick and distract from my race.
“Okay then. Why is it you and your party traveled here to the City of Sardik?”
“We believe, due to some recent problems in Podunk, that there may be something going on with werewolves and Duke Lupik. We came here to seek an audience with Duke Sardik, hoping we might find some answers about Lupik. We're particularly hoping for answers about how Sardik once had Podunk under his control, but for reasons unknown gave it up a few years ago. Of what we know of Sardik, it seemed out of character for him," I paused for a moment. The Clerics remained silent, seeming to ponder something, "Might I know your names now that you know mine?"
The Lead Cleric eyes were set on me, making me feel slightly uncomfortable under his gaze. "Yes Araja, you may," he drawled out, "I'm Mathias Herrin. Head Cleric of Palor. To my left is my first counselor, Caleb Madrick, and to my right, is my new," he gave enough emphasis while looking me in the eyes, that I assumed Rob once held that position, "second counselor Garis Rootwaller." Caleb and Garis both nodded when their names were listed. Mathias became quiet again, observing me closely. What more did he want of me, I thought. I had spoken everything that would defend myself of not being a malicious killer, but what was it that he was pondering? It suddenly seemed that maybe this trial wasn’t really about Cleric Rob. Or it could very well be that it had been a crazy day and I was exhausted beyond belief and my mind was beginning to loose sight of reality.
As that miserable minute passed and my mind raced under the pressure, Mathias then asked the question I had hoped would never be asked, especially in that setting under such scrutiny of all those religious folk.
“So tell us. Why is it you have fallen from Heironious?”
I hadn't realized how loud the whispering had gotten until it ceased. The silence was unnerving. The Clerics stared with realization as to what I was, at least those who hadn’t realized my state first off. I didn’t want to answer. I wanted to hold my tongue. I was most convinced none of the Clerics would believe me or side with me. It was nearly two weeks ago my opinion of Heironious and Erythnul almost got me killed. For me to say that Heironious wasn’t good any more was certain to ensure my demise. Yet, was I really gonna make it out of this alive? I thought for a moment to find the most tactful of words to best describe what had happened and perhaps not offend anyone in the process.
“I don't know if any of you remember the mark," I began, looking to see if any recognition registered on Mathias's, Cabel's, and Garis's face. Their faces remained impassive. All of the faces in the Cathedral didn't seem to register anything as I looked around, "Well, if any of you remember or have heard of the mark, my sister, Meryth, was among one of those who were marked. I had just been Exalted when I saw my sister become marked. From what I’ve been told, the mark claims the body as Erythnul’s. Knowing how good my sister was, I felt if I killed her before she could do any wrong, that maybe, just maybe she’d be spared that fate. But lo, how awful I felt as I watched her die in my arms. I waited hours for her Exaltation to come, but all I was left with was her corpse in my arms. Heironious came down and comforted me, seeming just as upset by the course of events. He told me, through my grief, how he wasn't able to Exalt her because of the mark being upon her body. I was able to come to accept that, though the guilt lingered for having killed my sister.
“Centuries later Malfeiya comes along and she’s saving people from the mark. She’s amazing and the most good person in the world. But she was marked. I let my heart go out to her, seeing how good and powerful she was, but knowing in the end she couldn’t be Exalted while marked...” I then fought back the emotions I could feel welling up. The anger that burned under my eyes were still ever strong as the day I was cast from the Kingdom. Through pierced lips and a voice that struggled for control continued, “But she was Exalted upon her death. And with open arms was welcomed into the Kingdom-” I had to stop myself, feeling myself getting carried away in my emotion. I knew I had to be careful the words I used, especially with my anger on the verge of spilling over. “I was angry because they let her into the Kingdom while my sister rots in the ground, a slave to Erythnul for forever! Heironious tried to soften the blow by saying there was something more to her that overlooked the mark, but I could see through it. It all became clear when she was Exalted. She was nothing more than some overly privileged, favorite of Heironious, immune to any and all consequences! She could do no wrong!” I let that statement hang in the air for a moment.
“So I left because I felt Heironious, whom I thought was all good, who'd never bend one of his rules for any one, went back on one of his most strict requirements by letting Malfeiya into his Kingdom.”
The Clerics whispered among themselves, I’m sure due to me slandering Heironious’s good name. But it was truth and I would never back down from what I knew to be right. Mathias was leaning back, a hand over his mouth in thought. He was obviously intrigued by my story. After a moment of processing my information he leans forward once more to speak.
“Araja, we have heard the stories about Erythnul and this mark. I am, and most everyone here are, quite certain they are just legends, especially concerning Malfeiya. You do know her body was buried in Threll about 200 years ago, don’t you?” I looked at the Cleric questioningly.
“I’m sorry, but that can’t be so. I saw her in the flesh in the Kingdom close to 3 weeks ago. Wings and all. I wouldn’t be here if she hadn’t ascended.”
“That is most curious then. If she’s in the Kingdom... then who was buried in Threll?” Caleb interjected. I was still confused by their timeline. I thought about my time in the mortal realm. It had been just shy of 3 weeks. How was it that Malfeiya was supposedly buried 200 years ago? It was too much for my head to make out, especially considering the fatigue that was there. Sensing that a good portion of them at least knew about my past to a certain extent (whether they believed it or not) I felt impressed that I should mention the mark from the mines to make my history more credible.
“I have more unusual news. I know most of you don’t believe in the mark... but I know it’s still around,” there was an intake of whispering when I made that comment. I decide to press forward, my fear of offending these Clerics rising with the next few sentences I say, “What’s more disturbing about this mark is it suggests that Erythnul is still in fact alive... and that Heironious is working with him.”
As that sentence left my mouth there was a gasp of astonishment. Whether they were as shocked as me when I first discovered it or that I would utter such ‘falsehood’ on their beloved Heironious, I couldn’t tell. But there I was, exposed and trying to remain strong while my heart raced under the anxiety I felt. Being alone and speaking ill of a God in a place filled with God fearing Clerics just seemed foolish, but I doubt I had much of a choice. Mathias, Caleb and Garis were clearly perplexed by my statement.
“That is quite bold of you to say. Do you have any proof of this mark?” Garis simply asked. My blood suddenly ran cold. Billy jumped to mind. But did I mention him and risk him and Isaac being killed? No, that was the last thing I wanted to do. I would not mention him. Billy was under our control anyways and Isaac was a good guy, well at least as far I know him. Yet, how else could I prove this mark when I had no other evidence? There was the mine, I thought to myself. I figured that would be my best option.
“A little southeast of Podunk is a silver mine. My friends and I had gone in there to get silver when we came across an unusually large mass of folk, all bearing this mark,” I then asked for a paper and pen so I could draw the mark for them to see. The three Clerics examined it, intrigued.
“This is most unusual,” he Mathias said staring at the mark, “but, how do we know this to be true and not you just making something up? We can’t just send a party of Clerics on a 3 week expedition on the word of one person.”
“If you did I would be more than happy to go with,” I added. The Clerics shook their heads in disapproval.
“No, it is too much of an investment. Are you sure there is no other source of proof that you might have?” Mathias asked, sounding tired or exasperated. The dread of possibly having to rat Billy out welled up inside of me. I didn’t want them to not believe me, but I didn’t want to make another enemy… I was about to give in and confess when someone called out saying they knew how to scry.
“If you're able to give us an accurate location to where the mine is, then we can go see these marked beings you claim are there,” a Cleric from the stands explained. I gave a close description of the location and could see in the middle of the room a great orb appear with a somewhat familiar location in it. I could see a path and after looking a few different ways knew where the orb was. I directed the Cleric toward the mine. Soon the image brought to view the mine with all the various sized rocks my party and I had placed in front of it to prevent the being inside from getting out.
“Um, sorry. I can’t make this go past obstacles without a line of sight,” the Cleric said. For a moment my hopes were dashed while being so close to the entrance to the mine.
“Why are there so many rocks there?” Garis asked.
“To prevent what we saw in there from coming out,” was my reply though it felt lame to say.
“I know how to scry as well!” Another Cleric chimed in excitedly, "Tell me what it looks like just beyond the rocks, far enough in that we won’t get stuck in them,” he instructed. I gave the description, adding details of the items that we hadn’t taken with us. Soon another image filled the orb of the inside of the cave. It was dark, but the glow of the orb gave some light, enough that we could see the clear footprints we left when exploring the cave.
“Careful, there is a drop off at the end of this path,” I said as they moved past the place we found Billy.
“It’s a floating orb. It’ll be alright.”
“Oh.”
The orb continued into the dark abyss. Suddenly a giant's face appeared that scared everyone with the it’s sudden appearance. As the orb moved away, it gave light to the mass of folk below. The orb maneuvered among the folk, exposing the mark on every single being it drew near. I looked back to Mathias who was mesmerized by the evidence that laid before him. I couldn’t be certain if most of the shock came from the sheer number of marked beings in the cave or the chant they all spoke. Either one, everyone was captivated by the image in the orb.
“That is quite... astonishing, but not in a good way,” Mathias said, “Why is it you haven’t taken this issue to the King?” All the Clerics murmured in agreement.
“I’ve only been in this mortal realm 3 weeks might I remind you. And so far, you have been the only group, who with evidence of this mark, has actually taken it seriously.”
“Now how does this mark work?” Caleb asked.
“Well, from what I was told growing up was those who had the mark were possessed by Erythnul. There was no way to cure it and they were made to take out his orders.”
The Clerics were obviously racking his head for an answer to what could be, in my opinion, another epidemic of the mark. The whole cathedral was in a buzz of whispers from the Clerics expressing their thoughts of the situation. With how shocked everyone was by the proof of my alibi, I figured, maybe they’d know if a marked person could be controlled by another being.
“Mathias,” I said loudly to be sure I could get the Head Cleric of Palor's attention, “now seeing that the mark is real, would you know if it were possible for another person to take control of a marked being?” I asked that only because I had some suspicion of Billy, but maybe the Clerics knew better about people being possessed and if others could override someone’s possession with their own magics.
“Araja, 5 minutes ago, I was most certain this was just a legend. With this evidence, right now I believe you to be the expert on this matter. I don’t know the function of the mark as well as you nor the magic that is used to make it. With that, I cannot give you an answer,” Mathias answered, with a hint of a condescending tone. I nodded my head and lowered my gaze, disappointed at the lack of an answer. I could see Mathias shift his weight in his chair. He looked around the hall seeing the Clerics have returned their attention to him. He let out an exasperated sigh.
“Araja Eloirakn, in conclusion of this trial, to make sure you are not workings with this deity, Erythnul, we shall search your body for a sign of the mark. If you are marked, you will be taken into custody and treated like those of old who were marked. If you are not marked, we shall examine the statements you gave about the death of our beloved Cleric Rob, possibly contacting your party and any other witnesses, over the next few days. You may not leave the city until we contact you, is that clear?” Mathias declared.
I nodded my head once to confirm I understood. With that I was taken into a room and examined thoroughly for a mark. Once satisfied that I was unmarked, the Clerics that searched me then escorted me outside to the quiet streets in the Court of the Gods. The moon was a quarter full, giving a gentle glow to the streets. I then made my way home. Part of me was utterly shocked that I had managed to walk away from all of that, but it didn’t necessarily mean I was completely off the hook. Part of me also felt like the trial was a huge let down. There was no closure to what was to be done with the mark.
Walking back to the Inn seemed long. As I walked into the Inn, I could see my party, looking as though they too had just arrived back. Looks were exchanged, but nothing was said. I think we were all in agreement to just put that day behind us and go to bed. How my head longs for the pillow. I suppose this is all I have to record of my first day in Sardik.

Day 20: Unfortunate Events pt. 2: Fulfillment and Utter Chaos

✻   ✻   ✻   ✻ ✻

I returned to the Inn with Isaac and Rekka. I needed to collect myself after the untimely death of Cleric Rob. There was also the matter of my vendetta toward Pendral that I wanted to discuss with Isaac. Once Isaac and I were in my room, I spoke to him in gnomish about my plan. First I would go to the Court of the Gods to give my condolences, as feeble as they may be considering I was the cause of Rob's demise. Then I would see if any of them would be interested in assisting me in my vendetta or knew of a resistance I could join. Isaac was all for taking Pendral down. However he was fairly sure going around asking about a resistance or for help to bring Pendral down was a very risky move. I had to agree. With the black guard and their tricks, if I wasn't careful, I would be found out instantly. I told Isaac I’d be back once I had paid a visit to Palor's cathedral and hopefully from there plan further as to what to do about Pendral.
Downstairs I saw Rekka, Gideon, Billy, and Jessica sitting around a table. I made eye contact with Rekka and mentioned that I was off to the Court of the Gods. Gideon stood up, wanting to come along. I made no objection. Before we could leave, Rekka stopped me and mentioned that she had heard of a lady named Sarandral. She was Pendral’s wife and word had it that she was seeking revenge on her husband. Sarandral had been praying to the God's of late for this revenge and suggested I keep an eye open for her while in the Court. I knew I would and was grateful that I possibly had a leg up on Pendral if his wife certainly was seeking revenge on him. It be another thing to do after visiting the Clerics of Palor.
Gideon went to his deity's cathedral while I went up the stairs to the cathedral of Palor. I saw the one Cleric whom I had inquired of Cleric Rob earlier that day. He, as well as everyone there, was sitting somber like, as though praying. I sat beside him, casually looking around to see if anyone had taken notice to me. A wave of hate swept over me for what I had done. I hated that Pendral had such a foul law in the first place. I took a deep breath before carefully speaking.
“I’m very sorry about what happened to Cleric Rob,” I said. The Cleric barely glanced my way. He didn’t say anything. Instead he looked as though he was continuing to pray. More cautiously, I whisper, “I plan to avenge him. I will bring Pendral down.”
At those words, it was as though I had encased his entire body in ice. The Cleric became rigid and slowly looked toward me. His face was pale and aghast. He stood up slowly and walked away, leaving me with a look suggesting I had spoken treason. Whatever Pendral was doing, he sure had everyone in fear of him. With that, knowing there was no point in trying to receive aid from these Clerics, I made my leave by reverently exitting the Cathedral.
My next order of business was to see if I could find this woman, Sarandral. I look around at the other Cathedrals and Shrines for the various deities. I asked a few people if they knew where Sarandral might be. To this I’m told she’s praying for the death of her husband at the alter of Bhaal. They pointed me in the direction of the deity. It was obscene how masterful the cathedral was for this evil deity. Clearly designed in a way to lure greed folk in. I walked in, my foots steps echoing on the polished, granite floor. A large, black altar, was in the middle of the back wall. Before it was a single person whom I assumed to be Sarandral. When I got right next to the person, I knew it was a woman. She took no notice of me. So I knelt down next to her.
“Are you Sarandral?” I asked, my eyes adverted as though I were praying.
“Hmm?” she responded. I could hear faint muttering of words.
“I heard you are wanting to kill your husband.”
“I would never do such a thing," the woman snapped, "That is why I am here praying,” she slowly added. I chose to assume that that woman was Sarandral. I could hear her continue to mutter her prayer.
“We have a common interest you know. I want to bring an end to him too.” I looked out of the corner of my eye to see what Sarandral's body language was. She was looking me up and down, clearly in 'ah' by my appearance. She hadn’t realized she was talking to an Angelic. She turned back to the alter and gave a small bow. I figured she thought I was deity sent.
"Meet me at the Knight's Inn in an hour," Sarandral instructed.
"Where's that?"
"In the first sector you're in upon entering the city." I nodded my agreement. She then left the cathedral, I following after.
I met up with Gideon shortly after leaving Bhaal's cathedral. He told me he went to St. Cuthbert to seek a holy weapon. Apparently he wasn't in good standing with his God at the moment and has to redeem himself. Away he could do that with in the city was by destroying an Alop that was kept in a prison in the southwest sector of the city. I hadn't a clue what an Alop was and so thought we should regroup with everyone. Perhaps Isaac knew what an Alop was. I also needed to get back and find the Knight's Inn.
Once back at the Inn, everyone must have been off running errands or finding information, for no one was at the Inn. I told Gideon I had someone to meet and that I should be back with in an hour. If not in an hour, I'd definitely should be back before the day's over.
The Knight's Inn was easy enough to find. Sarandral was waiting in the lobby and escorted me upstairs to a room. Once in a room, she instructed me about how she was sure that Pendral is messing around with one of his students. She asked if I would take a disk shaped device and attend his 6pm seminar at the Wizard College. There I could plant the device in his classroom. That way once the class was over, if there was any infidelity going on, it would be caught and Sarandral would have evidence of him cheating. If there was a scandal, that could be his downfall. I was more than obliged to help. It seemed simple enough. Sarandral told me to meet a man named Guthrie outside of the Wizard College and to tell him that I was there on her behalf. Before leaving she did tell me that I was welcome to bring others to assist me if needed. I also need to retrieve the disk and meet her in the East Gardens. Apparently it was their wedding anniversary and they were to have dinner at 8pm.
I hurried back to my party’s Inn to see if anyone was interested in helping out. As I walked in I could see  Gideon was in discussion with everyone. When I got closer I could hear it was about the Alop. They asked if I want to help, but I inform them that I had to be at the Wizard's College in an hour. I explained what I was to do and all felt it would be wiser to handle Pendral first and together. I then noticed Cortanna still wasn't at the Inn. I was concerned because last I saw her, she was running off with Joran. I asked if anyone had seen her since that morning. No had. I decided after delivering the disk back to Sarandral, I would check the market outside the city gates to see if she had decided to stick there to avoid being caught. As I thought that another thought came to mind. I imagined after Joran and his father were reunited, that they would have left. I figured she must have been watching our wagon in the mean time. If not that, then surely she must have been caught... I tried not to worry too much about it.
We arrived outside the Wizard College. Finding Guthrie was no chore since he was the one checking people at the gates. Upon telling him that I was there on Sarandral’s behalf, he gave each of us a pass. While handing them out, he mentioned a book that was in Pendral’s office that he’d love to have a look at. Guthrie was unable to get it and wondered if we’d be able to help. I tried to refuse, but he tagged on that he didn't have to give us the passes. I was miffed to say the least, but Isaac volunteered to check it out. As we walked away, Isaac mentioned to the party that if anything, nothing will come of it because if Guthrie was unable to obtain the book, then we very well couldn't.
Inside, Isaac chose to go scout out the book for Guthrie. Billy, of course, went with him. Rekka, Gideon, and I found the class that Pendral was to teach. We dispersed ourselves with all the other students. There was actually quite a collection of folk in attendance. Some Satyrs, Miras, a Tiefling, and a couple reptilian like folk. At least Gideon and I wouldn't stand out.
I sat down and took out a few items, pen and paper, to hopefully make it seem like I was any other student there to learn. Pendral entered 5 minutes late. He seems like any typical guy. His hair was short, well groomed with a clean shaven face. His robes were finely tailored and ordained with a rather large amulet. The amulet was quite interesting for it never moved as Pendral walked around the room giving his lecture. His teaching style was dismally boring. Perhaps it's a wizard thing to be interested in long lectures about physics behind our magics, but I thought the hour would never end. Pendral finally excused the class, 15 minutes late. I got up, purposely leaving the disk, paper, and pen behind (the latter two being visible) so I had something to retrieve once Pendral left the classroom.
After watching the crowd leave and seeing that Pendral hadn't come, I noticed only Gideon was with me. We looked around for Rekka. If she was hiding, it was definitely the worst timing on her part. I really hoped she wasn’t in the classroom, or anywhere else since I didn’t want any of us getting caught for being fake students.
10 minutes went by when suddenly Pendral emerged. I ducked into the room and as I walked through the door, I almost ran into a woman on her way out. I guess Sarandral was right I thought. As I retrieve the device and my paper and pen, I saw Rekka stand up and begin to hurrying out. She body language suggested she was scared, or disturbed... I felt bad for whatever kind of grown-up affection she ended up sitting through...
When I caught up to her I asked if she was okay.
"Why did you guys leave me in there!?" she snapped.
"Since when were we your parents and had to make sure you were where you were suppose to be?" I countered.
"It was so <a word I didn't understand> awful! I mean, the lecture. I fell asleep and when I woke up... Pendral was with a," Rekka dropped her voice to barely a whisper, "a succubus."
A chill ran up my spine. The woman who passed me on her way out must have been the succubus in disguise. I also had to wonder if the infidelity wasn't completely Pendral's fault. I brushed that thought aside. Even if he was the innocent party, he had a lot of other vile things going on in Sardik's city that he needed to account for. With that, Rekka, Gideon, and I went to the main floor of the college to wait for Isaac. He was already there waiting with Billy. They managed to get the book too interestingly enough. As we left, we handed the book off to Guthrie and left the Court of Power (that's where the college was). As we walk toward the garden, the clock tower reading 7:35, Rekka added that Pendral and the succubus were planning to kill Sarandral that night. How unfortunate that she'll soon know his plan, I thought to myself. As we went around a corner, a man, along the wall to the Court of Power, begged us to help him reunite with his grand niece and nephew. They were in the college. Apparently no one’s been taking care of him like they had promise. Since we were already trying to take care of one situation, we said we’d think about it. Plus, we're not suppose to help those in need according to Pendral.
We continued to make our way through the crowd when suddenly, as the garden entrance came into view, Cortanna ran into us! I grabbed her by the shoulders, unsure if I should hug her seeing her safe. I asked how things went once she got out of the city. She informed us that Joran and her were able to make it to his father. Before leaving, Joran's father secured their wagon so no one would mess with it. Cortanna did admit that she gave him some of our wealth as a 'thank you' for watching and securing our things.  And coming back into the city didn't give her any problems either.
Cortanna asked us where we were headed. I told her we were about to deliver proof that Pendral’s cheating and planning her death to Sarandral. To this Cortanna face lit up. She was adamant that we went with her first. I explained we only had a little under 20 minutes left to deliver the disc, but she said it would only take a minute. She persisted telling me to trust her. Out of frustration for her lack of communication I responded, “Last time I and the rest of us trusted you, you got a child killed!” Cortanna's eyes narrowed on me to which she replied, “and I got him back to his father alive!” I bit my tongue. I knew what I said was way out of line and I figured, as a peace offering, I'd quickly follow her to wherever she wanted us to go. Hopefully it would truly only be a few minutes.
We're taken to the entrance to Sardik’s Court. There we could see the Captain of the Guards standing around. He gave a knowing glance in our direction and I could only assume Cortanna was taking us to him.
“I have your evidence,” she informs the guard.
“What, so soon?" the guard stumbled to get out, "How- oh never mind follow me,” he said, leading us just beyond the gates and into a wooden shed. After shutting the door, all sound was canceled from the outside. He stroked his beard and with eyebrows furrowed in thought, he asked what the evidence was. Unsure if he was for or against Pendral I asked why it mattered to him. He explained that he and his guards have been trying to catch Pendral for along time. He was certain Pendral was up to no good and didn’t like how he’s taken control of the city, but since there’s nothing to prove any of his crimes, they can’t do anything about it. I then told him that I had recorded evidence on a devise Sarandral gave me. I also explained I was just about to deliver it back to her since she wanted proof of him cheating and in the process found out he was plotting to kill her. The Captain then told me that Sarandral was no better than Pendral. I was a bit shocked, for if she’s no better, why was I helping her? The Captain then tells us that we should go do what we already agreed to do and once the evidence was seen, they’d place Pendral under arrest. Hopefully then they'd get the city back in order.
We all gathered in the garden at 7:55. I presented Sarandral with the disk. She promptly operated the device to which a visual recording of all that went on in the classroom could be seen. Even Rekka could be seen, well at least until she dropped down. Sure enough the student was a succubus, and thankfully all they did was some kissing and plotting. After the recording finished, I had assumed the guards would have swarmed in and done something... but nothing happened. Sarandral hardly spoke to us. In fact she didn't seem a bit surprised, though disappointed, that Pendral was seemingly involved with a succubus. The minutes continued to pass by and I felt uncomfortable just waiting about for Pendral to show up.
Amidst the growing awkwardness of just standing around, a serving boy came out. He had a drink for Sarandral. He placed the drink on the table for her. Sarandral barely looked at him. He was quite bold actualy and began to flirt with Sarandral. Her mood lightened and interestingly enough, she was enjoying the attention. The serving boy, after a few minutes of chatting, then leaned in for a kiss and Sarandral was more than willing to allow it. I adverted my eyes, but when I looked back Sarandral looked odd. As I think of it now, drained described how she looked perfectly, but the word didn't come at the time because I hadn't a clue what was happening. At the moment though, I was also distractedby  how willfully Sarandral was fraternizing with this boy after how angry she was with Pendral's side action. What would happen if Pendral had walked in on her kissing another guy?
I tried to interrupt the two, especially seeing how drained Sarandral was becoming after each kiss. It was then I was beginning to think the server boy wasn’t who he appeared to be. I looked at my party and they too seemed concerned. When I looked back at Sarandral, I was the boy give her one last kiss to which Sarandral went limp in her chair. Immediately Billy went over and wrapped the serving boy in a huge hug. It was hear that we found out it was the succubus Pendral was with for she let off her disguise. Billy maintained his grapple on her while the rest of us attempt to take her out. It was difficult to say the least. As I went to attack her, Isaac caught my attention and I remembered an awareness coming over me. It was clear he was a devil and just as bad as Pendral. With the succubus grappled, I knew I had to attack Isaac first. I swung with all my might at him, ready to trigger the stored spell in my halberd. At the time, it was unfortunate that I missed him. After the attack my senses returned and I realized once more that Isaac was nothing more than a Hellbred. He asked what I was pulling and I apologized stating I felt compelled for a moment to attack him. His eyes darted to the succubus for a moment and I had to wonder if it was something she had done.
Isaac began to walk away when the delusion to kill Isaac came over me once more. Once more I failed to strike him. Isaac clearly was concerned for his life. He then cast a spell that killed the succubus. The others caught their breaths as I checked Sarandral. She was dead. I was furious with the situation that was at hand; in a garden with 2 dead bodies, no guards and no idea where Pendral was. I was especially frustrated that the Captain of the Guards hadn't shown up after the evidence was displayed. My thoughts were then disrupted by a recognizable person.
“Who are you guys?” Pendral asked. He still wore the fine robes he had on from his class. His hr was slicked back now and a faint cologne caught my nose.
“We tried to save your wife from this succubus that attacked her,” Isaac answered without skipping a beat. He pointed at the dead succubus. Pendral's eye narrowed on Isaac and a smirk spread across his face.
“She was meant to be killed," Pendral barely muttered.
"What?" Cortanna asked.
"Sorry. I was just saying thank you for your help,” Pendral spoke up, "Now I must be going-" Pendral began to say. As he stepped back, a dozen guards were there surrounding him. The Captain of the Guards informed him of his rights while placing manacles upon him. Isaac asked about all the creatures he summoned to this plain and the amulet he was wearing. Pendral's eyes were livid and he held his tongue. Isaac then asked if he could remove it. The Captain of the Guard was now engrossed with the conversations but Pendral still wasn't unwilling to speak. Isaac mentioned chatting with his imp familiar to which Pendral summoned him. The imp looked sheepish as he admitted that Isaac was in his office and did nothing about it. Isaac and Pendral get into a debate about the creatures summoned by Pendral. Isaac managed to convince Pendral to unsummon all the creatures he brought to this plain.  He then had him remove his amulet. As the amulet passed over Pendral's head, dissolved into a pile of ashes. Billy nudged me and pointed at the ashes. I barely caught sight of the ash being in the shape of the mark. Isaac saw Billy point and when he realized the symbol on the ground, kicked the ashes about. I knew I shouldn't say anything, but it explained a lot about Pendral and the way this city was being run.
The Captain of the Guard thanked us for our help and if there was anything he could do for us as payment. Isaac told him how we wanted an audience with Sardik since we had matters that needed addressing that involved him to some degree. The Captain nodded his head, mentioning that getting an audience with Sardik may be difficult, but seeing how Pendral was no longer a threat to him, it could very well be a likely matter to take place. The guards then dispersed, leaving the seven of us in the garden with two dead bodies.
As a group, considering the night was still young, we decided to help Gideon with his quest to destroy the Alop. We traveled all the way to the other side of the city, a good hour travel. Gideon informed the prison guards that we were there to destroy the Alop. One of the guards asked if that was an order from Pendral. I heard Cortanna begin to say that we had killed him to which I nugded her and was aboutt o say myself, 'yes' when I heard Gideon honestly answer, 'No.' The guards gave a funny look at us since mine and Cortanna's answers didn't go unnoticed.
"It was the Clerics who asked me to come here to destroy the Alop," Gideon truthfully explained.
"And you're willfully going to march in and kill one of Pendral's creatures?"
"Pendral no longer is with us."
"What do you mean?"
"He's dead," Isaac said nonchalantly. The guards looked at each other and a smile spread across their face. They happily escorted us through the jail, explaining how they went that many of Pendral's creatures resided here, none of them pleasant to guard. If any escaped they could very well be killed or worse. I shuddered at the thought having to unwillingly guard something dangerous. The jail itself was small. There was the main room with a series of 12 doors, not counting the one we came through. 5 on the left and 5 on the right walls with 2 at the back. The guards took us through one of the back doors. As we all crowded into the rather small room, one of the guards explained that there were a series of doors that we had to go through one at a time to prevent the Alop from escaping. The final room had a spell of containment casted upon it to prevent the Alop from traveling through the walls. We could only open the doors one at a time. So we could to stay together, Billy picked me and Rekka up to save some space. I know I didn't weigh much, but it was still impressive for this boy to carry roughly 200 pounds with ease.
We then began the slow process of reaching the Alop. When we opened the final door there was nothing to be seen. I casted light on the floor. Cortanna stepped in, looked around and gave a small scream. She pointed above the door. Billy, after putting me and Rekka down, went into the room. He grabbed the Alop and threw it to the ground. He then punched a hole through it. I couldn't say if the Alop was hurt, but Billy's hand began to shrivel. Isaac and Gideon casted some kind of negative energy on the Alop while Cortanna and I attacked with our weapons. It was a strange sensation to swing my halberd into a ghost like creature. I would have thought nothing happened except the Alop disappeared in a bright light. Cortanna looked somewhat dazed.
Us girls looked about the room while Gideon and Isaac healed Billy. Isaac had tried to heal Billy, but after a moment his hand would begin to shriveling again. However, together Gideon and Isaac were able to heal Billy. Both looked at each other with a look that I wanted to ask about, but I didn't. It suggested that there was something about Billy that surprised them, but then again maybe they were exchanging a silent thank you to each other? I don't know.
We returned to the guards, announcing that the Alop was gone. They are thankful and we take off without further ado. As we walked along the road back to our Inn, Rekka reminds us of the man who needed help by the Court of Power. It was nearly 9pm now and as  group we thought, why not? Gideon told us he'd meet up with us at the Court of Power after he went to the Court of the Gods. I had forgotten how far the College was from us. It was a little after 9:30pm when we got there. The late hour made for some quick travel with few people being out. Gideon caught up to us. having a new weapon sheathed about his waist.
The old man who pleaded for our help earlier was still outside the wall to the Court of Power. He kept asking people, as they passed, for help. We inform him that we'd like to assist and he quickly tells us he has a niece and nephew, Mable and Dibber, that he wanted to be reunited with since no one was taking care of him like he was promised. With the names of the relatives, we made our way into the court. But first we had to get Cortanna and Jessica passes. We spotted Guthrie and were able to get an extra pass for Jessica and Cortanna before going in. We asked a few people about Mabel and Dipper to which a guard informs us that they were in the Library. Before we could leave the guard sniffs and asked us if we had heard the tragic news. We said we hadn't. The guard informed us that their 'beloved Pendral' was deceased. I looked at him, shocked. I suppose he mistook my look for sorrow or concern for after looking at me, he added that there was going to be a gathering up stairs in honor of him. Isaac tells him that we'd be happy to go, I holding my tongue thinking 'happy' was not the word I would use to describe our unwillingness to attend such a gathering.
The guard tells us where the gathering would be happening  and then points us in the direction of the library. When we enter the library, there's only the hum of folk studying. We split up to see if we could locate Mabel and Dipper. I found Dipper, and mistook him at first for Mabel.
"She thinks you look like a girl," Mabel giggled. They were about 12 years old and clearly twins. Mabel had an odd quirk about her. I wasn't sure if she was eccentric or not all there. Isaac, who was with me, had Billy go gather the rest our party. A few minutes later screams lit up the library. We turned toward the sound and saw Billy dragging random couples toward us. The couples noticed that Billy was undead, screaming their realization that there was an undead in the library. Suddenly more shots came saying a whole swarm of undead were in the library and they had to escape. Pandemonium erupted, Mabel laughing the entire time. Dipper mentioned she had made an illusion of a horde of undead chasing after them. I placed my hand to my head thinking that wasn't exactly a nice trick, but hey, it took the pressure off of Billy. Isaac commanded him to put the couple he still had a hold on. The couple quickly scurried away. Rekka, Jessica, Gideon, and Cortanna come around one of the bookshelves, a look of concern etched on each of their faces.
Isaac jumped right in with how their Uncle was outside the school and that no one was taking care of him. They seemed confused since they were told that if they came to the school that their Uncle would be taken care of. We asked if they were able to go check on him once in awhile. Dipper explained that since Mabel was a savant illusionist the college headmaster brought them there and didn't let them leave the college. I thought that was very controlling. They took two children from their home, with the promise their Uncle would be cared for, and couldn't leave the vicinity? Isaac tells them that they should talk to their headmaster since their Uncle clearly hasn't been taken care of. Dipper snickers and suddenly a pig showed up. Mabel apparently had turned the headmaster into her pig familiar...
The twins went on to explain how once their Uncle was once a professor there, but had made some bad choices that led to getting his magics removed. Mabel carried his magic in a necklace. Isaac suggests that they could have their Uncle live in the school with them, that way he was cared for, and that he’d be happy to hold the necklace to prevent their Uncle from ever getting his magics back. Mabel willingly gave Isaac the necklace. The headmaster disappeared and reappeared a moment later with Mabel's and Dipper's Uncle. Their Uncle was so thankful that he went to each of us to shake our hands. We decided to get going since our job was done. As we rounded the corner, Isaac stopped suddenly. He turned around and went back to the twins. Isaac asked Mabel where the necklace was. She said she didn’t have it. I cast detect magic seeing if I could pin point the item. If the mecklace was holding all of her Uncle's magics, it would be strong.
I detected roughly 4 items of magic on her. I asked her what magic items she had. She listed off three of the four I sensed. I asked her why she wasn't telling me about the fourth and suddenly she got defensive saying she had told me all of them. I calmly stated that I knew there was a fourth magic item on her and wanted to know what it was. I reminded her that since she said she didn’t have the necklace, she had nothing to hide. All of a sudden, Dipper became enraged. I mean, he bursted into flames! When I looked at him, I knew he was an illusion. I was confused. The thought came to me that seemed to explain what was happening. With the oddness of Mabel, and her being a savant illusionist, it made sense that she made an illusion of a brother for herself.
We all prepare to attack, I focusing on Mabel since I was certain she was the cause of Dipper's rage. Dipper was beginning to burn the whole library. I don't know what the others were attempting to do about Dipper, but with the boy about to bring down the library in a ball of flames, I attacked Mabel. I aimed for her arm to prevent her from continuing her spell. Whether I miscalculated my strength or her size, I suddenly am met with screams from a 12 year old girl, clasping the gushing stump of her shoulder. The shrill scream was enough to make everyone stop cold for a moment. After a moment, my senses came back and I saw Dipper was still very much there and in control. That left me feeling sick with myself. I just lopped off a 12 year olds arm.... and the screams were too painful. Too close to Meryths...
I looked to Gideon who seems to read my expression. He came over and healed Mabel enough that the stump closed over. No idea what was to happen with her arm... but I had to leave. I had to get out of there. I staggered out of the door to the library. My head was in a fog of shock. With what happened... I kept telling myself that that wasn't why I was there. That was not my plan for being back in the mortal plain. To harm innocent children. Was it wrong of me to have abandoned my companions? I don’t know. I suppose if they come back to the Inn, they’ll either curse me for leaving them or for almost killing a child... I don’t blame them if they hate me. I hate being me.

Day 20: Unfortunate Events pt. 1

Dwa 31st, 4288: 20 Days in the mortal realm

Yesterday was a day of utter chaos! I haven't a clue what to think of myself... maybe it’s absolutely wrong of me to think I’m doing anything right because everything I tried to helped that day went disastrously wrong! It's absolutely discouraging! It's quite possible that I'll imprisoned or killed for what transpired. Maybe, just maybe, the Clerics will let me go free. I just- ... I don't feel like a good person. I feel like a monster; hated and incapable of doing right.
As much as I don't want to reflect on what happened, I suppose remembering what happened would prevent me for doing it all again.
We were just on the outskirts Sardik’s city. The mighty walls were coming into view on the horizon. As we continued toward the dukedom, some dreth stones caught our attention. Rekka, who had gone out doing her usual scouting that morning, came back reporting that there were imps holding a boy hostage. He was tied up, laying on a stone slab as though he was about to be sacrificed. A prang of fury ebbed at my being. I loathed imps. I wasn't sure why, but I knew they were tricky and sly. We hurried to the dreth stone to rescue the boy, I intent on sending those fiends back to hell one way or another.
Carefully we snuck up to the dreth stones. as we peer in, we see the boy is on an altar, tied, but alone. We cautiously approached the large stones that surrounded the stone altar. We could see the boy, but no imps. I let my guard down for a moment and ventured toward the boy. Suddenly 3 imps descended upon me and my party. We fought hard, I killing one of them with a double fire bolt from my halberd. Billy had one grappled  and the third imp was killed by Cortanna. With the one restrained, thoughts of discussing what was happening were made. I left Isaac to question the imp and turned my focus to the boy. As i turned around I was surprised to see a fourth imp on the alter poised to strike Rekka and the boy.
I must say, Rekka is quite clever. I didn't even notice she had gone to the alter amidst the fighting. Too bad there was a fourth imp.
"Isaac," I said, trying to get his attention to the alter. I knew he heard me for Isaac tried to negotiate with the imp on the alter. He was able to get out of him that a man named Pendral had summoned them there. When he said that, I reflected on some salt mepfits that we encountered a few days after the ogre incident. They too had complained about being summoned there by this Pendral guy and had mentioned dreth stones were part of this ritual. The imps, well the two of them at the time, were trying to perform the ritual that would send them back to hell. The boy was crucial to getting them back there in the sense they needed a substantial amount of blood. I knew of another way that wouldn’t involve killing an innocent boy, but the imps body's would have to stay here in the mortal plain. I didn’t get a chance to put that plan into motion because two arrows suddenly appeared and struck the boy, killing him instantly.
"What have you done!?" I cried out in a mix of anger and fear. The anger was because I assumed, for a moment, that the imp was the one who killed the boy. The fear was because as soon as the boy died, the dreth stones shimmered and began to spin wildly around us.
“You idiots!” the imp cried out before going invisible. The stones spun faster and faster, I bracing myself mentally for whatever terror we were about to find ourselves in. It was just a few short seconds, though if felt much longer, when the rumbling and shimmering stopped. We looked about our surroundings and I sighed a sigh of relief. Fortunate enough, we found ourselves still in the mortal plain.
We looked around, seeing if we could find any sign of the imp. I was able to make out the sound of wings fading As much as I hated imps, I knew we had quick work to make. It was clear now ho's arrows had struck the boy. Cortanna sheepishly looks out from behind a stone. I was livid with her. I knocked her with the end of my halberd and told her next time she fired an arrow, she best make sure it hit the correct target. Isaac had Billy talk to the soul of the boy and found out for us that his parents were camped nearby. We went to the camp and located his father. The father is understandably sad to find out his boy, Joran, was dead. We purposefully didn't state how he was killed other than imps were involved. I expressed how we wanted to assist in resurrecting his son. Joran's father referred us to a Cleric named Rob. Cortanna asked if he'd come with us, but he stated that he'd only go as far as the entrance. He explained he left the city for a reason and wasn't about to go back in after all his effort to leave. We didn't press the matter.
Getting into Sardik's dukedom wasn't difficult. It was quite busy with the amount of people coming and going. I actually had to wonder why Joran's father had to make such an effort. There was a small market just outside the gates that we left Joran's father at with our wagon. Isaac gathered a good portion of the treasures into his bag of holding. In another bag of holding, we carefully placed Joran's body into it. We then went into the city with the crowd. The first thing we did was we got some rooms at an Inn. Once settled in, Cortanna and I took off to get Joran resurrected.
The Court of the Gods was where we were directed after asking where we could find a Cleric. It was a huge sector with probably a shrine or cathedral for each deity in existence. It didn't take long for someone to help us locate Cleric Rob. We entered into the cathedral for Palor and inquired about Cleric Rob. We then waited for him to be summoned. As we waited, some guy who was despreately seeking to be a cleric, saw me and asked for my blessing to be a Cleric. He clearly knew I was an Angelic. I didn’t really care and was sorely tempted to point out my fallen state, but held my tongue. I looked around, spotting the other Clerics eyeing me. I said I saw no reason why someone so well informed of this deity wouldn’t be a worthy Cleric. With that everyone in the room, other than Cortanna and I, swarmed the man who sung praises to me, while the Clerics rushed him off to ordain him.
I thought about following after, but as i took a step after them a side door opened. Out came an aged man with the Cleric I had inquired about Rob with. That old man was Cleric Rob. It took awhile to get across what was needed to be done. His hearing was terrible, but once Rob understood what we were in need of a he informed us that resurrection was forbidden. I looked dumbfounded at the two Clerics. The other Cleric mentioned it was because of Pendral that it was forbidden. For a moment I was discouraged and was about to ask if there was a way to preserve the boy’s body since we had it with us. I figured the party and I could go to a different city to do the resurrection. Before I could suggest that idea, Cleric Rob looked around, giving a nod to the other Cleric who then left the room, and instructed me to present the body. I did so. Rob then pulled out a bag, mentioned he had been saving it, and dumped out what I could only assume to be diamond dust on the boy. Through my haze of astonishment that Rob would risk doing something that was forbidden, I barely caught the Cleric muttering words to which Joran woke up.
I was grateful for Rob's kindness. He wouldn't even let me offer to repay him. With that, all I wanted to do was get the boy out and pretend like nothing had ever happened. Cleric Rob did warn us before we left to avoid the black guards. If we got too close to them, they'd know that the forbidden magic was used. We shook our heads to confirm that we had heard him and took off toward the city gates.
All was well until we got in with the crowd of folk leaving and entering the city. We could see on each side of the entrance was a black guard. I debated whether we should go back to the Inn to see if the others had an idea to get the boy out unnoticed. If we pressed forward, it would be very risky. We'd have to keep to the middle of the crowd and even then, I wasn't sure if that'd be enough coverage for us to get out undetected. I opted to try the first idea and so we turned around only to find black guards flanking us. It was now no choice. Either they noticed and were coming for us or they were about to change shifts with the two guards at the entrance. Either way, I hoped with all my might that we'd be able to squeeze Joran out safely.
I could hear my heart beat ring in my ears with the stress of the mission. We kept getting jostled and bumped so much that my panic continued to steadily rise knowing the guards were gaining. I had a glimmer of hope as the entrance drew 10 feet before us. I remember thinking, 'just a little more!'
Then I heard it.
“Stop! You have used Forbidden Magic!”
I shoved Cortanna and the boy forward. If anything, I would stick behind and hope that Cortanna could get Joran to his father safely. I then swing around, sprawling my wings out in a dramatic spin of surprise.
“What?” I exclaimed in astonishment. With the anxiety I was feeling, I sounded a little surprised even though I knew they were there. Here was hoping I was feigning confusion of what was happening. The Black Guards charged toward me. Seeing them come at me so aggressively, I placed my hands in the air and glared at them before shouting, “I surrender!” 3 guards surrounded me while the other 3 ran past. My heart sank though I continued to hope that Cortanna and Joran would make it off safely. I also worried that with me being caught, that quite possibly I had endangered Cleric Rob’s life. For the great risk and kindness he bestowed upon Joran, I would hate for him to be punished because of some evil guy's absurd law. And to think it was only 11am in the morning.
I thought they would have taken me prisoner with no further questions. I couldn't fathom any logical way to worm out of the situation. I was determined to play innocent. Before they could place manacles on me, an Angelic pushed through the crowd and past the guards. After a moment I knew it to be Gideon. He pushed himself in front of me.
“What is going on!?” He exclaimed to the guards. I couldn't believe he was there. I still wonder how it was he knew where I was? Never the less, his presence was welcoming.
“The woman was caught using forbidden magic,” they replied. Gideon turns to look at me.
“What forbidden magic?” I replied. It was clear the guards didn’t by my innocence act. Even Gideon raised an eyebrow at me.
I’m then accused for resurrecting someone. Apparently such an act is unnatural here in Sardik's Dukedom, hence it being forbidden. The conversation soon turned into a debate between me and the one guard. I asked ‘how was it unnatural to give a body it’s soul back versus undead being raised’ and ‘was Pendral able to dictate to the Gods about what they could and couldn’t do in returning the soul to the body?’ The guard got a little befuddled and simply that I ought to have known better.
“I just arrived this morning!” I snapped. It was the most truthful thing I had said on the matter. The guards looked at the ones standing at the gates and gesture to them as to whether I spoke the truth. They confirmed it and admitted not having said anything thing to me about the rules. They quickly listed all the forbidden magics and deeds one might do. It was a short list, but clearly made up by a cruel man. For instance, helping those in need was forbidden! How aburd!
When he finished speaking, I was hopeful that I'd be able to make my escape... unfortunately, despite their attempts to convict me for using forbidden magic, they somehow knew I wasn't the one who performed the resurrection. I was asked for the name of the Cleric who performed it. Oh I wish I had lied! I was conflicted at the time. Did I lie and risk getting in further trouble if they find out I was lying? Or do I speak the truth and punish Rob for something that was honorable? As I debated the choices, a brilliant idea came to mind. I could use a wish from Isaac’s Sword of Wishing! I could tell the truth and go find Isaac while the guards went to get Cleric Rob. The Inn, where I assumed Isaac to be, was a few streets away from the main gates and I could use my wish to save Rob! There was no foreseeable consequence to that plan! How I looked forward to being honest and cheating the black guards of their victim!
When I saw the bolt of light disperse through the crowd, after I gave Rob's name, my stomach knotted up with panic. The bolt was headed in the direction of the Court of the Gods. I quickly excused myself seeing they had no other reason to hold me and made haste to find Isaac. When I got the Inn, I only found Jessica, the bar wench, there. I was slightly frantic at the absence of Isaac. She told me they went to eat at a tavern just down the road. I ducked out in the direction she pointed and quickly spotted the building. Once in, it was no chore to spot Isaac. I quickly went to him and as fast as I could told him to wish for Cleric Rob of the Palor deityt to be summoned to the merchant camp. Isaac thankfully didn't question my request. As he began to speak, a deep gonging sound echoed through the town. The folk around us immediately hushed and whispering ensued.
“Oh no," I heard someone say, "No’s done anything forbidden for so long.”
My heart sank- no. For a moment I could swear it ceased to exist. That gong could only mean one thing: Cleric Rob had been killed. I bit my lip.
"Never mind Isaac," I said defeatedly, "He's dead now..."
"Then how about this," Isaac responded, "Hubert, I wish for Cleric Rob to be alive again." My eyes looked eagerly at the sword.
"Um, sorry sir, but... his soul has been destroyed," Hubert answered. Soul destroyed? Had I known that was what would have happened to him, would I had still given his name? Had I know it would have happened so fast, maybe I would have tried another tactic. He didn’t deserve what happened to him. He didn’t deserve having his soul destroyed...
Pendral!
I clenched my hands into tight fists. I now had a vendetta. Pendral was almost as vile as Erythnul. That man didn't deserve to live and I was going to try to bring about his end. Perhaps find out if there was some under ground resistance. I didn't want to go back to the Palor Clerics, but maybe I'd be able to get assistance from them with the recent event... even if it was my fault that that happened...

Day 14: Beetles and an Ogre Lead to Wealth

Dwa 25th, 4288: 14 Days in the mortal realm

The travel has been rather uneventful. That is until yesterday and today. Before that, there was one encounter with some fire beetles. Cortanna made an attempt to calm them, but they were pretty intent on harming us. So we defended ourselves, leaving some beetle corpses behind.
As for yesterday we encounter an ogre. I wish I had known better when we first met up with him. I was cautious at first, but his friendly demeanor and offering of his food lured me into a false sense of security. We chatted with him and he disclosed with us about how his town of ogre’s had fallen into a sinkhole. The sinkhole was large and filled was with their treasure and a few relics. It was a little North of where we were.
I was almost beginning to pity the... guy? I did find it odd that he told us so much, especially when he brought up the treasure, but it was all a ruse. The meat some of us ate was had to have been bad since I, Cortanna, and Jessica became nauseous. The ogre attempted to take advantage of that and attacked us. He, however, miscalculated. Isaac, Billy, and Rekka were very much able to fight still. Because of that miscalculation, the ogre was destroyed. A feeling crept up in me that perhaps we were killing too much. Especially after what happened with the goblins... I don't know. Maybe I was still in shock from that incident. Considering the ogre was trying to harm us, I rationalized that that was the best course of action. During that fight I also realized my halberd could store a spell, making it more lethal when I want it to be.
Once those of us who were nauseous, felt better, we continued a little further on. In the short distance we traveled we came across a wagon that was well battered. There were bits and pieces of bodies here and there, but no evidence of anyone surviving. Jessica was certain it was a bear attack. Whatever it was, this was  a noble person's wagon by the symbols and items we found inside it. We decided to rest there for the night, setting up a watch just in case the bear came back.
When I woke up earlier today, I saw Isaac and Billy returning. Billy’s clothes looking rather torn and tattered. Isaac informed us that the bear was dealt with. He also told us that they found the sinkhole with the cool sword and helmet relics the Ogre had mentioned. Isaac told us the sword was a wishing sword. I suggest that each of us should get a wish... though that would leave one of us out since there was only 4 that Isaac knew of. I figured the wishes would be good in case of an emergency. The helmet on the other hand was given to Billy to wear. The magic of that item was to make the wearer look extra scary. If I hadn’t known it was Billy, I would have gone running for the hills.
Isaac reminded us about the wealth he saw down there. We decided to take the wagon and go to the sinkhole. Once there, I had Rekka and Jessica hop into a bag of holding so I could glide them down with me to fill it up. The others could then hoist it up and load the wagon up with the riches. This was an easy task. It got weird once the rope they were using to lift the bag up and down came back down without the bag. I looked up and could make out someone flailing their arms about, but it was too far for me to make out what they were trying to say. I grabbed onto the rope, tugged it twice and hung on for a ride up.
The ride lasted about 30 feet when suddenly the rope went slack and I realized I was falling. Quickly I stretched my wings. I had new feathers coming in, just enough that I was able to glide to the bottom. The 100 feet of rope coiled down to the ground next to us. Unable to communicate now, I knew I would be the better choice for climbing out. If I fell, I wouldn't get hurt, while Rekka and Jessica would likely kill themselves if they faltered near the top.
It turned out I wasn’t a very good climber anyways. After many attempts, I finally was about half way to the top when I saw another rope fall down. I grabbed onto it and finished the rest of the climb. Apparently the wagon was full and that was why they sent the rope down empty. Once more I hopped over the edge of the sinkhole to glide back down and help the other two out.
We all worked together to move the cart along. Kind of a silly idea that we decided to keep the wagon since we have no horse, but I that’s something we can fix once we get to Sardik’s Dukedom. Anyways, ‘tis the end of another day. Good night.

Day 8: Forgotten Consequences

Dwa 20th, 4288: 8 Days in the mortal realm

I didn't mean to leave my entry yesterday unfinished. The fire was dying and it was quite late into our first day of traveling from Podunk. I'll write about where we're heading at the end of this entry since I have a bit of time tonight. Like I had last wrote, I was mortally wounded, everything faded to white, and I was racked with anger at myself. A faint memory came back to me in the middle of my anguish. A family friend who helped me with conversion to Heironious in my youth, particular after the death of my parents, came to mind.  ‘...Even we make choices that we are certain were the best for that situation only for dire consequences to follow. You will find yourself heartbroken, discouraged, wanting to do anything and everything to right the wrong. When that happens, think back to this time and how you felt Heironeous wronged you,’ only that was told to me before the death of my sister, being kicked out of heaven and discovering that Erythnul and Heironeous must be working together. And because of that, it seemed impossible that Heironeous could ever have had a heart and felt as awful about anything that happened to us as I did right then with the massacre I insisted upon!
Oh the anger that coursed through me at my rash decision. Maybe death would have been best for me.
The whiteness that enveloped me ebbed away into a haze in which I and my companions then saw a floating, archon lantern. I knew this to be a holy device used, in place of an Angel, to deliver a message. I was too involved in my own critical thought to catch the details of what was said, but I wouldn't be surprised if I was being thoroughly chastised. By the time I actually realized the archon lantern was delivering a message, I caught it making perfectly clear that we were to be given a second chance at what had transpassed. This time we had better not mess it up.
With that the orb disappeared and right before my eyes was the scene of the goblins right as I remembered seeing them when I first entered the clearing. I felt my body go rigid as the memories of the dead bodies flooded my mind from moments ago. Yet there they were; alive! As though nothing had happened. And that was exactly how I wanted to keep it, as though nothing had happened! I carefully looked back and saw my fellow comrades behind me still in the safety of the trees. I gestured to move back and made an attempted to move myself. Whether or not I would have been successful in such an attempt (a giant gash still etched across my torso), I clearly heard the lead goblin call after us.
“Hello there!” he called out  in Common. I froze not daring to move. I looked at my companions and they too seemed unsure as what to do.
“Don’t worry, we see that one of you are wounded. We’re friendly and would be more than happy to help,” he said as he advanced our way. Soon enough he was next to me and could see the awful state I was in, “Would you like for one of our Clerics to heal you?” He asked. I desperately wanted to say no, but considering my condition, it would seem very odd to refuse. I managed to nod my head and soon a Cleric was at my side and healed me.
As I regained my feet under me, the rest of the party and I are warmly welcomed. They escorted us to a fire pit and offered their food to us (Griggs actually, to which Jessica accepted...). We sat around the fire and while there I noticed Billy was missing. A moment of panic swept through me but then I remember the cloak heirloom Rekka got. I assume she must have smartly gave her cloak to Billy to use. Gideon was missing, and still is. At the time I thought he must have been the lucky one to have snuck off without being detected, an impressive feat considering he was drunk. Now as I think about it, I wonder if his God was behind the archon lantern and he's off serving him for some other purpose currently.
The lead goblin once more told us of their plight and how they’re friendly. They had been chased out of their home by werewolves. Some humans had camped nearby them to which on the full moon they wreaked havoc. When they brought the mine up as a possible location for them, Isaac thankfully jumped on that and was able to get it across to them that there was bad magic down there. To this the goblins were concerned, but they don’t push the matter either. With the goblins unmotivated to move into the mines, we proposed that since they were friendly, perhaps they would be interested in temporarily moving into town (of course at the acceptance of the townsfolk). The goblins honored by such a notion and accepted it. Immediately we took off to put the plan in motion. The goblin leader pulls out his horn, a flash of panic swept over me, but followed very quickly by the rational part in my mind figuring he was merely rallying everyone together than for our doom.
We arrived back in Podunk, the goblins camping outside of it so we could get everything squared away. With no sign of the Mayor near or in his home, we headed to the tavern since that was a popular meeting place. Upon entering, we found that the Mayor was surrounded by Griggs. It could be assumed for the past hour the Griggs had mercilessly kept him dancing. We did have one of the goblins come to represent their cause with us and once the Griggs took a moment to acknowledge us, they coward to one corner of the tavern. It was enough to say the Mayor was relieved to finally stop dancing.
Isaac, after seeing that the Mayor was alright, set off to do other business and left me with the goblin to discuss with the Mayor the goblin’s plight. It didn’t matter much to me, at first, that Isaac left. It wasn't until after discussing the options with the Mayor that I got nervous. I tried highlighting the potential good that could come from the comradery with the goblins. They'd do well with caring for livestock would be able to tend the lands that were newly abandoned, or the land would become barren otherwise. But for whatever reason beyond me, the Mayor looked at me and asked, “Do you think this would be a good decision?” I looked around the place. Without Isaac to fall back on, I felt somewhat panicked. I looked to Cortanna, Rekka and Jessica. Courtanna shrugged since she was roughly 16 and still new to town herself. Rekka, who I thought was with Cortanna and Jessica, was no where to be seen. And Jessica, well she looked like she was busy comforting the Griggs with a plate of food. I looked back to the Mayor who had pleading eyes on me. I kind of wanted to give him an incredulous look suggesting, ‘what do you think I think moron? I just made it sound like a good idea and figured you’d be the one to say yay or nay to it.’ And would also have added, ‘I just showed up in town two days ago! Do you really think I’m qualified to make such a HUGE decision on behalf of all the townsfolk?!’
Having learned what my rash speaking was capable of doing hours ago, I took a deep breath, thought calmly for a moment before answering the Mayor. I suggested it would be wise as a temporary alternative, but we should handle it democratically and have the town vote on what they felt would be best for them. The Mayor accepted this to which I excuse myself from him and the goblin to go find Isaac. He being a member of this town would be best at getting them assembled. Cortanna followed close behind me.
We didn’t have to look long. As we walked a few squares from the tavern I saw Isaac off to the right by the Blacksmith’s. I could see he was frustrated and Rekka was with him. Her cloak was in hand but Billy wasn't anywhere to be seen. I cautiously approached them and filled Isaac in on what was decided. After giving the information and suggesting that Isaac be the one to rally the townsfolk, I asked where Billy was. Isaac said he was inside the shop and was about to go get him and his gear. I waited with Rekka while he did this.
As we waited, Rekka seemed distracted. I don’t know what she was looking at, but she looked confused about something. Once Isaac, looking grim, came back out with Billy, Rekka mentioned to him that she was certain that there were invisible beings walking around. Cortanna agreed with Rekka saying she too had heard something walking about. Isaac asked Billy if he saw anything. To this Billy informed us that there were goblins walking around. A wave of suspicion swept over me. Why would the goblins be sneaking around town? Lpet alone invisibly? Were they making sure we didn’t do anything to their representative? Are they potentially planning against the town. I wasn’t the only one equally concerned. To this Isaac suggested we go to the goblin camp first to see what’s going on.
The goblin leader looked hopeful upon seeing us, but we informed him we hadn't resolved the situation of their stay. Before he could say anything we informed him about the invisible goblins we saw in camp. To this he seemed surprised. He hadn’t a clue why there would be. The most he could gather was one of the shaman’s potions were taken and it was quite possible that the younger goblins were the ones responsible for this mischief. I, and the others, had no reason to disbelieve the leader, so we went back to the town to hopefully finalize the plan.
We rang the town bell and shortly there after the town gathered together to see what was going on. Isaac gave a moving speech, highlighting the help with livestock and tilling the land, to which it was unanimously decided that that goblins could stay. I was impressed with how simple it went, then again considering it was Isaac who was well respected by the town, not too surprising. Had it been me, it probably would not have been nearly as convincing or have started another massacre...
We delivered the good news to the goblins. Exclusively to the leader, we told him that we planned on looking to the werewolf problem to see if we could reclaim their homeland. The lead goblin seemed overly happy at the help we were extending to them. Any gratitude he wanted to show was brushed aside as the townsfolk set about helping the Goblins get settled in.
As people were moving about, we rested a moment. Isaac then made mention about the mine. He said it was a silver mine and noted how we as a group would most likely be fighting werewolves in the foreseeable future. Isaac suggest that it'd be wise to go there and carefully extract enough silver to coat some weapons for that cause. We all agreed. Isaac then tagged on that when we were done gathering the silver that we should barricade the entrance. It was hoped that that would prevent people from accidentally (or purposefully) going into and hopefully keep what we know was in there from coming out. There was a murmur of agreement all around. I especially wouldn’t want those marked creatures to be set loose. I knew exactly what marked beings were capable of...
Collecting the silver was simple enough. We also took with us whatever provisions we felt necessary from the pile of things Billy and Rekka had collected (like torches and rope). Then we went about blocking the entrance to the mine. It was a grueling 2 hour process, Billy doing the bulk of the work. Then we took our tired and sore bodies back to town. Isaac and Billy took the silver to the blacksmith so our weapons could get coated. I had asked for a halberd before they took off with the ore. While they were gone, Cortanna asked if she and I could trade items. She wanted the shifting weapon handle. The only thing she had that I thought would be a fair trade was her mythril armor because it was lightweight and with the recent events... I felt slightly vulnerable in my cloth tunic and under armor. Cortanna was more than willing to trade and with that we waited around until the weapons were done.
I had assumed waiting around would entail a day or two, but in the matter of hours we had master crafted, silver plated weapons. My halberd was stunning. There was something more to it, but I wasn’t sure what it was yet. It was then the consensus to leave immediately for Sardik’s dukedom since everything in Podunk was, at the moment, under control. We're two day’s travel out right now and enjoying a sense of peace. I know we’re on our way to get answers and hopefully help with what I can only assume to be a battle with werewolves.
